A script is one plain text. The same text can be read three ways.

The format#

A script in three layers
# Why we built it
- say who we are
- say the problem in one sentence
We started because every release took an afternoon of screen recording.
We wanted one take that was good enough to send.

# The demo
- open the editor
- show the layouts
Let me show you how it works.
  • A line starting with # is a topic: what this part is about.
  • A line starting with - is a point to talk through.
  • Any other line is full text, read word for word. A blank line ends a paragraph.

Three ways to read it#

  • Topics show only the headings. Use it when you know the subject.
  • Bullets show each topic with its points. Use it for a natural voice with a nudge.
  • Full shows every word. Use it when the wording has to be exact.

Write all three layers when you can: a topic per part, two to four points, then the spoken paragraph. Then you can choose the mode on the day.

Pace and size#

The reading pace runs from 60 to 260 words per minute and starts at 140. The text size runs from 20 to 120 px. Count the words of the full text and divide by the pace to know how long the take will run.

Where it shows#

Alone and full-screen, to rehearse (press F). In the studio over the video at the top or bottom, beside the video, or popped out into the control bar. The teleprompter is never recorded.
